Family Program and Sample Schedule

Family Information

Whether home is near or far, parent and family members can now say they have family in Davis, California. Orientation recognizes it is a family effort to send a student away to attend college, and UC Davis is honored to be the choice! The UC Davis campus understands the critical role family members play in their students' lives and educational success by providing continued communication and support.

All students and family members are encouraged to attend Transfer Orientation or First-Year Orientation during the months of June, July and August. However, we understand it isn’t always possible to travel to UC Davis during the summer and again when classes start. We offer sessions for international and national (out-of-state) students and family members before fall quarter begins.

The International and National Family Orientation program runs concurrently with the International and National Student Orientation program. Family members are not with their student during advising sessions. This separation is the first step for students to learn autonomy and develop the skills they'll need to be successful at UC Davis. By sharing the experience at Orientation, families can build a partnership with UC Davis, focusing on ways in which everyone can support students in reaching their educational and career objectives. Please note that separate activities for siblings or young children are not provided.

Family members are encouraged to review the information provided on this website for new students and learn how to support them during the transition to UC Davis. Students have access to many great resources on campus and so do their family members. Be sure to explore the links below for parent and family resources found at UC Davis.

Program Logistics

At International and National Family Orientation, participants learn about academic and social aspects of campus resources available to students and receive information about support services. Participants meet current students and hear presentations from university staff. This is a prime opportunity to meet with other UC Davis family members to network and share experiences with.

International and National Family Orientation participants spend their day with Family Hosts, current undergraduate Orientation Leaders. The Family Hosts are highly trained and skilled individuals who are excited to introduce family members to the vast resources available at UC Davis, share their own undergraduate experiences, and answer any questions. Be sure to look to the Family Hosts if you need anything during the program!

Suggested items to bring to International and National Family Orientation are located on What to Bring. It will be helpful to reference the Pre-Orientation Tasks with your student to see what they need to do before attending Orientation.

Overnight Accommodations for Orientation

There are many off-campus options for overnight accommodations that Family Orientation participants can choose from. As International and National Orientation is held right before classes start at UC Davis, all residence halls are being prepared for students to move in for the academic year. While students attending our Orientation program can opt to stay in the residence halls, we do not have space available for extra guests. Please see the online resources below to find local hotels and navigate the area.
